Apple Bits Users Group
/ABUG.index91.98 8-bit
Compiled by David Stephens
This Index was made with AppleWorks 3.0
This text file is an index of the 8-Bit files and programs
issued on the Apple Bits Users Group (ABUG) Disk-of-the-Month
(DOM) for the years 1991 to 1998. The program names are listed
in alphabetical order followed by the DOM's volume name and a
short description of the program. To read about IIGS files, please
refer to the file, INDEX91.98.GS on the Index disk titled ABUGindex91.98.
A seperate file listing only the AppleWorks files is also included
on the 5.25" disk version.
ABUG maintains public domain software libraries dating back to
the late '70's - for the Apple ][, ][+, //e, //c, //c Plus and
IIGS. Almost every month ABUG issues a new DOM packed full of
SUPER Apple II Software! The DOM is available in two sizes. A
5.25" (140K) floppy disk that's contains eight bit programs
only and a 3.5" (800K) floppy disk that has both eight bit
and GS programs. These disk and past disk offerings are for sale
at ABUG monthly meetings or can be ordered from the Club Software
Librarian.
Starting with the July 1995 DOM, the GS and 8-bit 3.5" DOMs were combined on a single 3.5" disk and were named "/ABUG.DOM.07.95". The 8-bit 5.25" disk remained unchanged and kept it's standard name "/II.DOM.07.95".
No DOM is issued for the month of December. A DOM was not issued for the months of May and June, 1996.
Note about bootable and non-bootable disks:
DOMs with volume names that begin with /GS.DOM. and /IIGS.DOM.
are non bootable disks. Most DOMs starting with /II.DOM. and /ABUG.DOM.
are bootable and contain the files Basic.System, ProDOS and a
launcher program like Sneeze, DLT8, NORT, etc. To run programs
from a non-bootable disk you first need to run a launcher program
from a bootable disk.
Following each file and program name is the DOM's disk title with one of the following phrases: '(8-Bit)' '(8-Bit) 3.5"' or '(8-Bit) 5.25"'. The '(8-Bit) 5.25"' means the file is on a 5.25" floppy disk. The '(8-Bit)' or '(8-Bit) 3.5"' means the file is on a 3.5" floppy disk.
About Public Domain Software and Shareware:
All public domain software and shareware is supplied as-is, with
no warranty. All programs will not work on every model of Apple
or compatible computer. Disk media is warranted: If you receive
a defective disk, return it to us and it will be replaced. Public
domain software is software that is not copyrighted. Some programs
in the library are copyrighted, but the authors have given some
sort of permission allowing public distribution. Shareware agreements
usually go something like this: Try the software for a short time.
If you wish to keep it, you send the price of the program directly
to the author. After registering this way, you may receive full
documentation and an updated and/or more powerful version of the
program. Shareware agreements differ widely, however. Read the
details within the individual programs for the specific agreements.
Shareware programs are often commercial-quality. The authors have
bypassed normal commercial distribution routes, which results
in lower software costs. Please support the efforts of shareware
authors by complying with shareware agreements.
To quickly locate certain types of files, use the code words with the brackets below with the search/find/scan option of the text reader of your choice. For icons use [icon], 8-bit bitmap fonts [font], graphics [grafx], 8 bit sounds [sound files], games [game], AppleWorks [aplwk], music [mus], launcher [launch] and utilities [util]. (Be sure to include the brackets with the word)
Special thanks to Jeanne Chappell for starting the index project and Chuck Garrett, disk librarian, who has a special ability of keeping all this stuff in some kind of order and Phil Gardos, maker of all disk labels, big and small!
If you see errors or have ideas that would benefit the Index, I would like to hear them. Contact me, David Stephens, via email: daves@solve.net or by voice/answering machine at (816) 483-0004.

an automobile race played with a special deck of cards. It is
from Joe Kohn's Public Domain disk, "High Stakes". You
win by finishing first in a auto race against the computer. With
your dealt cards you may get special cards to slow up "Mr.
Fancy Pants Computer" with a flat tire, run out of gas, need
servicing and even causing a wreck. The down side is the computer
can do the same to you. You get other cards to get out of trouble
and travel various distances. One difficultly is that you have
to discard cards from time to time and some of the cards may seem
too valuable to give up. Good luck!!! See About.This.Disk file
on Side 2 for more information.

won't try to use those bad blocks. This program, formerly shareware,
was donated to the public domain on 9/14/93. by Jawaid Bazyar
BABY.DATE - /II.DOM.06.94 (8-Bit) 5.25"

BinSCII - /ABUG.DOM.02.98 (8-Bit) 3.5"
BinSCII - /II.DOM.02.98 (8-Bit) 5.25"
BinSCII is a program for the Apple II series that encodes and
decodes Apple ProDOS files to allow convenient and relatively
error free transmission over email networks. BinSCII is functionally
similar to unix' uuencode/uudecode utilities and Macintosh Bin
Hqx (binhex); that is, it allows any local file, including the
file's local attributes, to be transferred via email in a format
that consists entirely of printable text. This allows the file
to traverse the network unscathed, and be perfectly reconstructed
on the destination system. A Must Have Program
BIT8.LABEL - /II.DOM.06.95 (8-Bit) 5.25"
Imagewriter 3.5" Labels - version 1.5
This label-printing program for 3.5" disks was written in
Applesoft BASIC by Lorne Walton of Apples British Columbia Computer
Society. The purpose of the program is to print on "standard"
3-inch high by 2.75-inch wide labels, the kind that are sold on
continuous-feed tractor paper. The label emerges with the "backside"
and "spine" line of the label upside down (printed with
bit graphics) so that it may easily be read when the disk is right-way
up in vertical disk storage units.
BITS 1-9 - /GS.DOM.04.94 (8-Bit) 3.5"
This is a series of articles about the inner workings of our Apples.
I know that this has shown up before in DOMs but since education
is the best weapon, it is very important that all II owners read
this!
BLACKJACK - /II.DOM.01.95 (8-Bit) 5.25"
An 8 bit card game from Joe Kohn's Public Domain disk, "High
Stakes". Instructions included.
Bomb - /IIGS.DOM.8.93 (8-Bit) 3.5"

BscIt v1.0 - /II.DOM.11.97 (8-Bit) 5.25"
(pronounced "biscuit")
The binscii routines in this program are based on BinSCII v1.0.3.
The only drawback to BinSCII has been the spartan user interface.
This has a more user friendly interface. David Whitney
Budget v0.9 - /IIGS.DOM.3.91 (8-Bit) 3.5"
A Home Budget program that will keep track of 16 budget items
and 16 Tax and Business items. There are instructions and sample
files for practice and a calendar routine to help plan ahead.

CALENDAR - /IIGS.DOM.2.93 (8-Bit) 3.5"
CALENDAR - /ABUG.DOM.2.93 (8-Bit) 3.5"
Calendar is an 8-bit program that will work on all Apple II computers.
Give the program any month of any year and it will create the
calendar.
Calendar Patch - /GS.DOM.11.92.2 (8-Bit) 3.5"
Patches ProDOS 8 versions 1.9 and 2.0 so that the slot clock driver
contains a six year table beginning with the current year, for
any six year period beginning as early as 1940 or ending as late
as 2039. If you're not using version 1.9, upgrade now. Version
2.0 will be released later in 1992. This is necessary because
the slot-based clock driver in ProDOS 8 version 1.9 contains a
year table that ends with 1991 (having last been changed for ProDOS
8 1.2 in 1986). It is only necessary for people using slot-based
clocks or their equivalents on Apple II+, IIe or //c computers.
Apple IIgs computers never use this clock driver.
Cal.Printer - /II.DOM.08.94 (8-Bit) 5.25"
Allows your Apple II and Imagewriter to print a calendar for any
given year or a calendar for any month in any year. Requires:
Apple II and Imagewriter printer.
Calorie.burner - /II.DOM.06.94 (8-Bit) 5.25" [aplwk]
Calorie Burner Spreadsheet. Ok, ok - YOU might not need to start
thinking about getting in shape, but I do. So I'm including this
file in case you happen to know someone who could use it. An AppleWorks
Spreadsheet file.
CAR.DODGER - /II.DOM.11.93 (8-Bit) 5.25"
Car.Dodger is an 8-bit game where you use left and right keyboard
arrows to dodge oncoming cars.
CarrElectric - /GS.DOM.02.94 (8-Bit) 3.5" [font]
These are electronic symbol dingbats (pictures). Both TrueType
and Bitmapped fonts have been included.
Cartoon.Hollow - /ABUG.DOM.11.95 (8-Bit) 3.5" [font]
Bitmap fonts.
See "TrueType Fonts - /ABUG.DOM.11.95 (GS)" for more
information.
Cat.Filer - /II.DOM.08.94 (8-Bit) 5.25" [aplwks]
Reads ProDOS and DOS 3.3 directories, notes their contents and
writes them, along with a few other facts, as desired, into a
ProDOS ASCII text (TXT) file. Once done, AppleWorks will accept
this into a database simply by specifying the number of fields
in each record.
CatPro v1.0 - /IIGS.DOM.7.92 (8-Bit) 3.5" [aplwks]
Takes the catalogs of your non-copy protected ProDOS disks and

Cheque-Mate - Personal Checking Account Organizer
...This program was written to fill a need for a simple, yet full
featured check book accounting system. I was unable to find the
kind of program that I wanted because the software available at
the time was slow or else it went beyond just balancing and maintaining
a checkbook and got involved in personal net worth, investment
management, and so forth. I wanted to write a program that just
did checking, and did it well....
...The program has the ability to support, as many separate accounts as you wish. When you create a new account, it creates a subdirectory on the "Data Pathname" volume, gives the account a unique number and creates the files it needs inside of that directory. Each account also has optional password protection so as to give a personal checking account user privacy in case several users are using the program, and sharing a data disk.
The main features of Cheque-Mate are the usual list/add/edit functions expected. It also provides multiple parameter search and report facilities, data archiving and reviewing previous years, year-end reset, easy monthly reconciliation, draft printing on a printer, and it maintains a list of budget categories which can be used in the search and report module.

Templates for AppleWorks. Form Works 1 provides you with 20 forms
for business and home use to make your work go more smoothly!
Included are: ACTION REQUEST FORM, ADDRESS BOOK, MEETING AGENDA,

.2, .3, .4, Min.15, Min.20, & Min.30 (daily appointment calendars),
PHONE CALL, ROUTING SLIP, SHOPPING LIST, WEEKLY PLANNER, TWO WEEK
PLANNER, and QUICK MAILER.-
The forms are locked and ready to go except for a few which ask
for your name, address and phone number. You can unlock these
files, provide the needed information and then lock the files
again, or a smarter move would be to keep the DOM locked and intact
'as is' and make a working copy of the DOM, change the copy and
relock the files. Some of the files will look wrong on the screen
but fear not, there are some printer control codes added to provide
strategic underlines in certain places and the printout will look
fine. Also, some of the form titles are printed at a larger font
size and they also look weird on the screen. Just print them out
at NLQ mode and make photocopies of them so you'll have a supply
on hand. You will never have been SO organized before AND you
won't know what to do with all the extra time that they save you!

Keyboarding - /II.DOM.05.95.1 (8-Bit) 5.25"
(Typing Tutor) An excellent typing instruction program! This month's
DOM is a real treat for folks struggling with touch typing on
the keyboard. It's especially helpful for beginners as well as
average users who wants to sharpen their skills.
As with all DOM's you purchase, you should make sure that it is
write protected and that it is used only as a master to make your
working copies. With this month's DOM, you will have to copy each
side to it's own 5.25" (side one) disk and change the volume
name to KB3A and KB3B. This is important because the disk will
become a user specific disk from the start. It will ask you to
type your name and from then on, it will be your disk. All the
information about typing improvements will be for the name on
the disk. This way you can make a fresh set of disks for other
members of the family with your May DOM master.
If you don't have AppleWorks, use QuikView on side One to read
the About file and ReadMe file. The following are excerpts from
the readme file by Charles Hartley.
Computer Keyboarding has been through several revisions and extensive
field testing with my own students. Essentially, it is designed
to help a user, who has little or no typing experience, learn
the correct way to type. I have found it very effective with most
middle school students. It should also be effective for older
students and adults as well.
I wrote this program because I could not find a decent and affordable
typing instruction program that taught typing the way I thought
it should be taught.
This program is unique in that it puts greatest emphasis on accuracy,
not speed. Other programs that I have seen or used seem to have
a fixation with speed. The program is highly structured in the
sense that users must attain a degree of mastery with one set
of keys before they proceed with the next set. At the same time
there is a degree of flexibility built into it. Users who have
difficulty with a set of lines are presented with the same set
again and/or are presented additional lines to type. Also, users
have the opportunity to practice lessons a second time voluntarily
if they wish.
Lessons cover all letters, and most punctuation marks. They are
interspersed with three games that continue typing practice, as
well as two that are strictly for fun.
Extensive record keeping provides an accurate picture of the user's
performance. The user has frequent opportunities to see exactly
how he/she is doing with each letter learned. Freeware

MSDOS.COPY v1.3 - /II.DOM.04.98 (8-Bit) 5.25"
MSDOS.COPY is an 8 bit program that can copy files from any directory
of a 3.5" MS-DOS diskette to a ProDOS disk. The MS-DOS disk
must be inserted in a drive that is physically capable of reading
an MS-DOS diskette. An Apple SuperDrive (or equivalent) attached
to an Apple II 3.5 SuperDrive Controller card is one such device.
So is a "Floptical" drive attached to a SCSI controller.
An Apple SuperDrive attached to the Apple IIgs Smartport will
NOT work. Apple Superdrives are automatically found by the program,
a manual device selection routine must be used to specify other
drive types. By Hugh McKay, January 1994. Freeware - Some special
hardware may be required, please read the docs!

STFC.Launch requires Star Trek: First Contact is an incredible
simulation of starship command in the Star Trek universe, and
it runs on the enhanced Apple //e, the //c, and the IIGS. However,
on the IIGS, you need to slow your system to normal and set your
display to monochrome, or the game runs really strangely. This
launcher program will do that for you, then, after the game is
over, set your system back the way it was when you started. To
use the Launcher, just place a copy of it into the same folder
where you keep Star Trek: First Contact. Then launch the GS/OS
application named RSTFC.LauncherS instead of the ProDOS 8 program
'StarTrek.System'. The game will run normally, but at the correct
speed and with the monochrome mode active.

Many of the ways to analyze spreadsheet data require the numbers
be first sorted by size. This is also true for data being prepared
for use by a graphing utility. This utility allows the user to
sort spreadsheet data in either ascending or descending order.
Unlike the AppleWorks "Arrange" option, you can choose
to sort by blocks of rows or columns. It can sort values or labels,
but not a mixture of both. If values are sorted the utility will
convert any formula in the row or column to a value. The sort
is limited to a total of 99 cells.
SWAP2CPLUS - /II.DOM.07.94 (8-Bit) 5.25"
If you read the addendum that came with the version 9.0 manual,
it stated that there are so many additional parameters included
in version 9.0 that they had split them up into two separate pairs

does not know how to use the second set of files -- you have to
RENAME them so that COPY II+ can find them.

Apple II Public Domain Gems - Article 4
The Toddler And Preschool Gameroom Disk
(Washington Apple Pi disk 812)
Portions from a review by Phil Shapiro who teaches computers in
elementary school, and develops educational software for the Apple
II family of computers.
"Finding good quality software for pre-schoolers is always
a challenge. And even if you did locate some good programs, you
might well hesitate before investing $30 on a disk for your "young
genius."
"Well, look no further, because a fine public domain disk
holds the answer. The Toddler and Preschool Gameroom disk, created
by Linda Van Zee, is exceptional in every way. The programs are
colorful, musical, and fun for both kids and kids-at-heart. There's
even two challenging memory games for older kids too..."
Note: To get out of this program, you will have to press

TYPING.INST - /II.DOM.7.93.1 (8-Bit) 5.25"
Computer Keyboarding is designed to help someone who has little
or no typing experience to learn the correct way to type. I have
found it very effective with most middle school students. It should
also be effective for older students and adults as well. I wrote
this program because I could not find a decent and affordable

VCR Library Data Base helps keep a VCR collection organized in
a meaningful manner. It will accommodate tapes containing more
than one movie. The template should include a sufficient number
of appropriate fields to solve your VCR library needs. Extra fields
are built into the template should you find it necessary to use
them. Simply rename the fields and fill them with data. This template
is designed to be used in the single record layout; once the template
is on the screen, issue an Apple-Z to get to the single record
format. by Brian Theil

VIDEO POKER - /II.DOM.01.95 (8-Bit) 5.25" [aplwk]
For those of you who don't have video poker machines installed
in your supermarkets (as is the case in Nevada), a word of explanation
is in order. In the case of the real machines, you drop a coin
(5 cents if you're as cheap as I am, a quarter more often, a dollar
if you're a high roller) into the machine, press a button, and
it deals five cards onto the colorful screen. You can choose to
discard any number of these, and get replacements. Your winnings
depend on how good your hand is after the replacements.
You don't play against anyone, even the machine. You merely try
to get the best hand you can by wise discards. The winnings table
is set up so that on the average, you will lose a small percentage,
of course. But at least you have some control over the outcome;
or at least you feel like you do.
Video Poker requires AppleWorks v3.0 and UltraMacros v3.1 to play.
An 8 bit game from Joe Kohn's Public Domain disk, "High Stakes".
VIDLBDB - /II.DOM.06.95 (8-Bit) 5.25"
Home Video Data Base to keep track of video programs for home
use. Comes in handy if there are several tapes with numerous programs.
Bibliography Data Base is a simple form to keep track of your
personal library. You can sort your books by the usual name, author,
and kind of book. It is suggested that you devise a code to use
to signify what kind, ex. s - sci fi, h - horror, a - adventure,
etc., this would go in the category of type. One letter symbols
allow more for you to put in that category. When it comes time
to sort your books you will have a cross reference.
VIGOR.GAME - /II.DOM.04.95 (8-Bit) 5.25" [game]
A Hires arcade game that is very simple to play. You command a
space craft on the left side of the screen and obliterate the
oncoming enemy ships. Once one of them reaches your side, you
lose one of your ships. If you get hit by one of their bullets,
you will lose another ship. When all three of your ships are destroyed,
the game will end. by Russell Nielson freeware

Zip Chip Patch - /GS.DOM.11.92.2 (8-Bit) 3.5"
Patch for No-Slot-Clock that will allow it to work with PRODOS
v2.01. While SMT does have a new system file that executes upon
boot which works with all versions of PRODOS, I have found it
does not work with a ZIP Chip installed unless the Zip is set
at 1 mhz (ug!) when booting form a hard drive. This patch will
modify the original SMT install program to handle PRODOS v2.01
and earlier versions. Please see the READ ME file for more information.
