Apple Bits Users Group
/ABUG.index91.98 GS
Compiled by David Stephens
This index was made with AppleWorks 3.0
This text file is an index of the files and programs issued on the Apple Bits Users Group (ABUG) Disk-of-the-Month (DOM) for the years 1991 to 1998. The index is divided into two major groups. The first group is the 16 bit, Apple IIGS programs with special internal headings for SynthLab songs, Fonts, Sound, Second Sight, HyperCard, etc. The second group lists the Eight Bit programs. The program names in both groups are listed in alphabetical order followed by the DOM's volume name and a short description of the program.
ABUG maintains public domain software libraries dating back to the late '70's - for the Apple ][, ][+, //e, //c, //c+ and IIGS. Almost every month ABUG issues a new DOM packed full of SUPER Apple II Software! The DOM is available in two sizes. A 5.25" (140K) floppy disk that's contains eight bit programs only and a 3.5" (800K) floppy disk that has both eight bit and GS programs. These disk and past disk offerings are for sale at ABUG monthly meetings or can be ordered from the Club Software Librarian.
Starting with the July 1995 DOM, the GS and 8-bit 3.5" DOMs were combined on a single 3.5" disk and were named "/ABUG.DOM.07.95". The 8-bit 5.25" disk remained unchanged and kept it's standard name "/II.DOM.07.95".
No DOM is issued for the month of December. DOMs were not issued for May and June of 1996.
Note about bootable and non-bootable disks:
DOMs with volume names that begin with /GS.DOM. and /IIGS.DOM.
are non bootable disks. Most DOMs starting with /II.DOM. and /ABUG.DOM.
are bootable and contain the files Basic.System, ProDOS and a
launcher program like Sneeze, DLT8, NORT, etc. To run programs
from a non-bootable disk you first need to run a launcher program
from a bootable disk.
Following each file and program name is the DOM's disk title with one of the following phrases: '(GS)' '(8-Bit)' '(8-Bit) 3.5"' or '(8-Bit) 5.25"'. The '(8-Bit) 5.25"' means the file is on a 5.25" floppy disk. The '(GS)', '(8-Bit)', (8-Bit) 3.5"' means the file is on a 3.5" floppy disk.
HyperStudio GS and HyperCard GS stacks require a Apple IIGS computer or a Mac with the appropriate emulator and the HyperStudio Program (or HyperStudio Run-Time program) or the HyperCard GS Program (or HyperCard GS Player) to open and run stacks.
About Public Domain Software and Shareware:
All public domain software and shareware is supplied as-is, with
no warranty. All programs will not work on every model of Apple
or compatible computer. Disk media is warranted: If you receive
a defective disk, return it to us and it will be replaced. Public
domain software is software that is not copyrighted. Some programs
in the library are copyrighted, but the authors have given some
sort of permission allowing public distribution. Shareware agreements
usually go something like this: Try the software for a short time.
If you wish to keep it, you send the price of the program directly
to the author. After registering this way, you may receive full
documentation and an updated and/or more powerful version of the
program. Shareware agreements differ widely, however. Read the
details within the individual programs for the specific agreements.
Shareware programs are often commercial-quality. The authors have
bypassed normal commercial distribution routes, which results
in lower software costs. Please support the efforts of shareware
authors by complying with shareware agreements.

If you see any errors or have ideas that would benefit the Index, I would like to hear them. You can contact me, David Stephens, via email: daves@solve.net

Fix5.25 v1.0 - /ABUG.DOM.01.96 (GS) [icon]
AppleDisk5.25 Drive Count Fixer v1.0 is a quick and easy way to
set up System 6.0.1 to display only one 5.25" drive icon
on a 1-drive system. System 6.0 tried to count the number of drives
connected, but didn't always work, so Apple removed that feature
in System 6.0.1. They did, however, provide a way of eliminating
the extra icon, but only if you know what you're doing. This program
uses Apple's method for removing that extra icon, but does it
automatically so that you don't have to worry about it.

Fix DeskJet.SHS Driver v1.0 - /ABUG.DOM.10.98 (GS)
This GS/OS application fixes a bug in the DeskJet.SHS driver which
is part of the Independence package from Seven Hills Software.
You may have noticed that when you try to click in the title bar
of another window while the Page Setup or Print dialog is open,
that window becomes selected, but then there is no way to reselect
the dialog and you can lose your data this way. This program fixes
that so that you cannot select another window while the dialog
is open. It has been tested with Independence v1.0 and v1.1 and
will work with each. by Rolf Braun, released 1-15-95 by Sassy

FlameStation XL - /ABUG.DOM.04.97 (GS) ???????????
FlameStation takes a satirical look at an internet and bbs phenomenon
called flaming and flame wars. These are sometimes obscene, vicious
attacks at someone message in a newsgroup or e-mail. Some are
thoughtful, clever and helpful, most are obscene, rude and ridiculous.
FlameStation is created to help calm the nerves and take a real
look at the futility of flaming someone. It is also not meant
for anyone under the age of 18 because it does CONTAIN PROFANE
LANGUAGE. It is hilarious and quite clever. While running this
program there's intermittent insults scrolling at the bottom of
the screen.
"..... The purpose of FlameStation is NOT to help you
flame better
and faster. The only intention I had was to show how ridiculous
flaming is, even if all of your messages end with "peace
& love
& bless you all". Flaming is silly. ...."
FS can be configured for different effects and will automatically create a hilarious flame message. You can even encode it if it gets too raunchy or to hide from too young eyes, provided of course that the recipient has FS, ShadowWrite, or Hermes. Also you can simply e-mail a special code at the bottom of the flame and if the flamee has FS he/she can insert this code to read the flame.
There are clever satires of the "Make Money Fast" spams as well as an all inclusive Flame Form for when you really don't have the time to make a proper flame.

choose the "Install" button when it appears. Install
Special- Certain programs (including the Page Layout, Database

Blacktop
Song
Happy Birthday Apple IIGS! To celebrate the Apple IIGS' eleventh
birthday, I have decided to release a couple things I wrote years
ago when I was just learning how to program the IIGS. The first
of these programs, Song, is a little ProDOS 16 diddy which uses
the Note Synthesizer to play, "Happy Birthday." Very
appropriate. The second program I have decided to release is,
Blacktop. Blacktop is an INIT which will make the IIGS desktop
black. Blacktop is small, simple, yet effective. I wrote Blacktop
for a friend who wanted an easy-to-see IIGS desktop, and the best
color for this is black. The original name for Blacktop was Blackout--not
the virus, I assure you. Actually, due to a little bug, and the
name, Blackout never made it to the public. Now that its debugged,
and renamed, I hope you all enjoy it. The best part is if you're
a programmer, you'll find I have included the Merlin 16+ source
code for both programs. Have fun! -- Tony Morales

IRnda v2.0 - /ABUG.DOM.04.98 (GS)
IRNDA 2.0, a desk accessory that permits users to load systems
extensions or NDAs without re-booting. The utility IR is required
to run this utility. I recently downloaded Jay Krell's IRnda v1.0.
It worked, but it couldn't install other desk accessories, because
of a problem in the Desk Manager. Well, I decided to write my

JPEG.viewer - /ABUG.DOM.03.97 (GS) [grafx]
View any JPEG file by loading from the file menu. This program
is very straightforward. Just open any file that ends in .JPG
and watch it do its thing. The graphic, however, will only be
displayed in black and white, and cannot be converted into any
other format. You can, however, save the screen in SHR format
using any screen saving program if you want to do so. Patience
is required if you don't have a decent (8 Mhz or better) accelerator,
and the results are currently only grayscale, but it's another
nifty thing our 'dead' machine can do :-) This is a freeware,
prerelease version. Also contained in this folder are two photos
that were downloaded from a Beatles page on the internet.
ED.JPG -- a JPEG photo of the Beatles performing on the Ed Sullivan
Show.
CAVERN.JPG -- a JPEG photo of the Beatles performing in the Cavern

displaying a kangaroo hopping across the GS/OS splash screen at

it hop half the way?--

LemminGS - /ABUG.DOM.02.97 (GS) [game]
(This program needs to be unshrunk with GS-ShrinkIt v1.1 to it's
own folder.)
You have to assign jobs for all of the little lemming workers
as they come out of their little hole to report for work. You
can have climbers, diggers, builders, etc. but you have to use
strategy to accomplish your mission or the little buggers will
die prematurely. Of course the goal is to organize them into a
working force to overcome obstacles so they can finally reach
the doorway to go outside and fall off the cliff. If the right
persentage make it to the door, you go to the next level.
"It's an interactive work of art for the IIGS ;-)"
says Joe Kohn.
"Seriously, it's the latest game from Brutal Deluxe. It's
modeled after, and is a tribute to, a game that is highly popular
on many other computer systems.
"If a picture is worth a thousand words, a demo version of
a game will speak volumes. This demo version includes the first
10 levels of the game, and it should answer any questions you
may have about the game.
"LemminGS, both the demo version and the complete version
(which has 92 challenging levels), requires a IIGS with at least
700k of available RAM after GS/OS loads. So, you need approx 2
megs of RAM. The game also requires that you launch it from System
6.0 or later. Although not after GS/OS loads. So, you need approx
2 megs of RAM. The game also requires that you launch it from
System 6.0 or later. Although not required, a hard drive and an
accelerator sure wouldn't hurt ;-)
"Brutal Deluxe programmed LemminGS as a way to say thanks
to all those folks who have purchased their one and only commercial
software product - Convert 3200...a speed demon of a IIGS graphics
conversion program that costs all of $15. LemminGS is free to
owners of Convert 3200, but it is not freeware. Both programs
are available exclusively through Shareware Solutions II, and
to help defray mailing costs for LemminGS, Shareware Solutions
II asks for a $5 shipping/handling fee that'll cover the cost
of the 3 disk set, labels, mailers and postage to anywhere in
the galaxy."
LetterSlide - /IIGS.DOM.10.92 (GS) [game]
LetterSlide is a very good and challenging Apple IIGS game. The
object of the game is to collect all jewels to move to the next
level. However, blocks of letters prevent easy access to the jewels.
To overcome these obstacles, you push letters to form words, the
letters will disappear and you get the jewel. To play LetterSlide,
double click on the icon LetterSlide from the Finder.

various shapes (rectangle, circle), the marquee, and others. You
can use up to 16 colors as well.
ListPatch - /ABUG.DOM.07.96 (GS)
List Manager Patch for System 6.0.1 corrects a very minor problem
in the keyboard navigation. When a list is rebuilt, the keyboard
navigation key buffer isn't cleared out. You can see this by opening
a Standard File dialog box, pressing the first letter of a folder
name, clicking the Open button (click the mouse, don't hit RETURN),
then typing the first couple of letters in a filename in the new
directory. You'll wind up on the wrong file. Copyright 1993 by

application to start using another, which is especially nice when
copying and pasting between applications."
"The Manager even supports multi-tasking for some applications."

Mike.icons1.0 - /IIGS.DOM.9.93 (GS) [icon]
Mike.icons is a set of super nifty icons for Folders, System.files,
Applications and the Trash can. My favorite, and one you will
have fun with, is the Trash.Bill icon which changes the Trash
can to a picture of Bill Cat - who 'heaves' upon fill-up. To install
these icons, copy the icon files to the Icons folder of your boot
volume. Next time you boot the computer, the Finder desktop will
be a work of art.
Milestones2000 - /ABUG.DOM.07.97 (GS) [game] ???????
MILESTONES 2000 is an automobile race game played with a special
deck of cards. One player plays against the computer. The program
contains over 500K of digitized sound and graphics files, packed
into a single 340K file for ease of use (using Apple's sound and
graphics compression techniques).-
This game is Reliefware -- very similar to Shareware, $15.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Milestones 2000 requires an Apple IIGS with
1 Meg of RAM. To use this minimum configuration, you need to prepare
a "stripped- down" system disk (see docs). Users with
a hard drive and many desk accessories will probably need a bit
more RAM.-
System 5.0.2 (as a minimum) is needed to run MILESTONES 2000.

REFRESH - /ABUG.DOM.11.96 (GS)
Refresh Screen NDA v0.1
One fine day, I was working very hard on a game and took a short
break. I don't actually recall why I took a break, but it sorta
happened and when I got back my new screen saver, Twilight II,
had engaged. All nifty and stuff, but when I moved the mouse the
screen was all screwed up. It was the blank screen you get with
the name of the application in the menubar, but it was in 320
and all the colors were wrong. I couldn't get the game to redraw
its screen so I was forced to quit it. That sucked bigtime. So
I wrote Refresh Screen. It doesn't always work,it just asks the
GS to redraw the screen and menubar, but it's very useful when
your mouse cursor is dropping frames all over your screen and
chaos reigns. Freeware by Avi Drissman

Shifty List 2.0 (demo version) - /ABUG.DOM.10.98 (GS)
Shifty List is a utility whose basic purpose is to allow you to
select a group of trusted extensions and desk accessories to be
loaded when you shift-boot your Apple IIGS; these groups of extensions
and desk accessories are called "scripts." Normally,
shift-booting starts up your system with no extensions or desk
accessories of any kind; however, Shifty List, once installed,
provides a way to change that. In addition, you can create multiple
Shifty List scripts, each of which defines a group of extensions,
desk accessories, and the like which you would like to load, and
you can easily switch between them using various techniques, which
will be described later in this documentation. This demo version
of Shifty List 2.0 can be distributed freely. The registered version
of Shifty List 2.0 cannot legally be distributed without the express
written permission of Eric Shepherd.

TWGSupgrade - /ABUG.DOM.08.97 (GS) [Hyper]
The TransWarp GS Upgrade HyperCard Stack. The TransWarp GS has
always been a well designed accelerator card for the Apple IIGS.
The designers of this card were wise enough to anticipate that
faster processors would be available in the future and made the
card easy to upgrade. Upgrading processor speed involve changing
two parts in most cases and expanding the amount of cache Ram
is just a little more complicated. Following the instructions
in this stack, you will be able to get your TransWarp GS running
to 10MHz. Most TransWarp GS cards can go all the way to 15MHz,
but at those high speeds success will depend a lot on the particular
card, GS, and configuration of the computer. However, all TransWarp
GS users should be able to upgrade to 10MHz, so this stack will
start off illustrating this process.

VirDet601 - /ABUG.DOM.07.96 (GS)
VirusDetect601 contains two inits. Both compare block zero of
your boot volume to a built in image, the inits will alert you
to the fact that block zero has been modified. They will work
with either 6.0.X or 5.0.4 versions of GS/OS. At least one known
virus uses the last byte of block two as a counter. This init
checks that byte to make sure it is set to zero, and will notify
you if it is different. These inits are totally transparent, and
do not add anything measureable to your boot time, so protect
yourself! :)

RAM (each additional meg allows 32 more pictures)
Virtual.Data v1.0 - /ABUG.DOM.11.97 (GS)
Virtual.Data is an Apple IIGS Finder Extension which keeps track
of Finder's open directory windows, their positioning and format,
for write protected volumes. "I found a need for Virtual.Data's
functionality while exploring CD ROMs using Finder on my Apple
IIGS. I found myself double clicking everything in sight which
usually had the effect of launching an application. On return
to the Finder, I had to laboriously find my way back to the directory
I was in before I could continue exploring. Believe me, it is
very easy to lose your place in 600MB of data!" Virtual Data
requires System 6.0.1 and Finder 6.0.1.

Xmas.Serenade - /ABUG.index.93 (GS)
This is a cute little program that displays Christmas pictures
while playing a variety of Christmas songs. If you have a IIGS
or accelerated II, you will need to slow down the speed - that
is unless you would like some 'jazzy' Christmas songs. *:)
Xmas.Trash.Icon - /ABUG.index.93 (GS) [icon]
This is a cute Trash icon for the Apple IIGS. When you fill the
Trash, voila', the tree lights up with Christmas lights. When
empty, it's just an ordinary undecorated tree. I have added a
sound to my Xmas.Trash.Icon so that a bell rings when the tree
lights up (fill Trash can). To use this icon, copy the file Xmas.Trash.Icon
into the Icons folder of your boot volume and reboot the computer.
To add sound to your Trash icon, select "Control Panel' in
the Apple pull-down menu - then select 'Sound'. Select the event

like for that event.

ZIPupgrade - /ABUG.DOM.08.97 (GS) [Hyper]
The ZIP GS Upgrade HyperCard Stack. The ZIP GS has always been
a well designed accelerator card for the Apple IIGS. The designers
of this card were wise enough to anticipate that faster processors
would be available in the future and made the card easy to upgrade.
You don't even need to solder parts in most cases. Following the
instructions in this stack, you will be able to get your Zip running
at 12.5MHz. Although there are many people who have managed to
go beyond 12.5MHz, each particular Zip may or may not reach those
speeds. However, the Zip GS was _designed_ to go at least as fast
as 12.5MHz, so this stack will start off illustrating this process.
